How to use your cell phone or tablet as a very good GPS

May 17, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Fellow H4W members—

I will be conducting a brief overview/explanation session on how to use your cell phone or tablet (Apple or Android) as a GPS.  The library has a big screen TV so we can use it for our session.

Many of us have purchased different maps over the years, or purchased different GPS units.

We will explore how to use an app called GAIAGPS.COM.

Another alternative is the Gaiagps app.  It works on tablets and cell phones and has all the National Geographic Maps for the whole country plus hundreds of other USGS maps and aerial photographic maps for the USA.  GAIA has a free version you can check out, or a premium membership for $40/year (about the price of not too many gallons of gas).

The Gaia app can download tracks from our club website or any other website to our phone or tablet. I use a Garmin GPS and an Apple tablet, or iPhone, as a back up with different map orientations

I know many folks are not interested in following “tracks or knowing where they are”—“I just follow the Jeep ahead of me”.  No problem—it is rather relaxing—but you’re missing half the fun!

If you (or your navigator) are interested in the meeting—give me a call (cell 928-706-5048)
